Sara Caples, AIA
Sara Caples' highest priority is quality control of the full range of Caples Jefferson's activities. Developing the brief and program, ensuring the clarity of concepts, peer reviewing all phases of all drawings and specifications, visiting key points of construction, and coordinating client relations.

Rigorous responses to design challenges marry strong functional and aesthetic solutions. The bullet-resistant glass of Marcus Garvey Houses Community Center invites the public in while protecting them from neighborhood gangs. The continuously wheelchair-accessible circulation desk of the Starr East Asian Library allows for much improved delivery of library services while restoring the elegant spatial impact of the McKim Mead and White interior.

She has won numerous distinctions including AIA national and chapter awards, multiple NOMA national awards for Excellence in Architecture, a New York City Art Commission award, and a Municipal Arts Society MASterworks Award. In 1998, Caples and Jefferson were Emerging Voices of the Architectural League; in 2009, they were honored as New York City's MWBE of the Year.

Ms. Caples' design work has been featured in a wide range of publications including Architecture, Architectural Record, The Architect's Newspaper, ArchDaily, Architizer, C3, Competitions, Detail, Fast Company Design, Tatlin, and The New York Times. Ms. Caples has served as Visiting Critic at Syracuse University and twice as Visiting Distinguished Professor at CCNY, the City College of New York. With Everardo Jefferson, she co-edited the New Mix issue of AD in 2005.

Ms. Caples holds a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Smith College and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. Her public service includes acting as a juror for the National AIA Interior Awards, the National AIA Housing Awards, and for the ENYA, Emerging New York Architects, South Street Seaport Competition and serving on the board of the AIA New York Chapter, the Dalton Council, and as President of l'Ecole Tenant Association.
